My fourth graders
at Kipps Elementary just performed an original musical play called
"In Search of Liberty." I wrote the music and the tie-together
script; each class took a segment of the SOLs for the Virginia timeline
and created a skit to accompany that part. We integrated music concepts
of meter, rhythm, melody, and harmony along with playing instruments
and choral singing techniques. The show (presented on April 27 to
the local PTA) was a great success. Many of the students have indicated
that, along with being fun to do, they are quite sure they'll remember
those dates better for having had the opportunity to learn them
in this musical format.
