Windsor Oaks Elementary
School
Virginia Beach, VA

Windsor
Oaks Elementary
school has strived to increase the use of technology over the
last seven years. The Technology Action Team has worked to meet
that goal. This action team, as part of our School Planning Councils
Strategic Plan, is composed of faculty, staff, parents and students.
Working cooperatively with the schools faculty and staff,
a computer lab was established in 1994. Training for teachers
and students began shortly thereafter. In the fall of 1998, the
lab was upgraded from a Macintosh lab to a Windows 95 computer
lab. Over the years, the Action Team has tracked how the lab was
used including the types of computer literacy skills students
were learning. Windsor Oaks was one of the first Virginia Beach
schools to implement the computer managed reading program, Accelerated
Reader. The school has hosted 19 visits by other Virginia
Beach elementary schools interested in the Accelerated
Reader program, the computer lab or the work of the Technology
Action Team.
On March 29,
1999, the school held a Technology Open House. Students, under
the supervision of their teachers, demonstrated various computer
skills and programs used in the classroom, computer lab and library
media center. In the library media center, fourth and fifth grade
students demonstrated how they used the electronic card catalog,
CD ROM research software, and the Internet. Third and second grade
students demonstrated the Accelerated Reader program, the
STAR Reading computerized testing program, various curriculum
related software titles and how to use the computerized white
board for large group instruction. In the computer lab, the kindergarten,
first, fourth and fifth grade students demonstrated keyboarding,
graphics creation, and database creation and manipulation. Student
created computer products such as word processed stories, graphics,
and multimedia presentations were displayed throughout the school.
A local vendor, KIS Computers, set up an informational display
of home computing for parents.
As part of the
evening, State Superintendent, Paul Stapleton, and Virginia Beachs
Director of the Office of Technology, Bob Mullen, spoke to the
PTA members about state SOLs and our school systems
direction in technology. The State Deputy Secretary of Education,
Cheri Pierson-Yecke, demonstrated the Commonwealth of Knowledge
web page. Windsor Oaks produced a multimedia presentation about
how technology is used on a daily basis. The presentation is available
for viewing on this web page.
