Queen Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I (1513 - 1603), of the house of Tudor, Queen of England and Ireland (1558 - 1603) attributed to Federigo Zuccaro (c. 1543 - 1609), oil on wood panel painting

The artist, Federigo Zuccaro, to whom the portrait is attributed, was born about 1543 and at age seven placed under the guidance of his brother in Rome. While still a youth, he had leaned the art of painting well enough to be employed by Pope Pius IV. He later worked in Florence, parts of France, Antwerp and in 1574 in England -- where he is said to have completed a portrait of Queen Elizabeth.
