Target Curriculum: English/Writing

Target Grade: K

SOLs: C/T.GR5.2   E/W.K.1   E/W.K.10   E/W.K.12   E/W.K.9
Time: One 45 minute class period

Objective:
Objective: After listening to an alphabet book the student will: verbally identify the letters of the alphabet; locate them in the alphabet stamps in Kidpix; stamp the alphabet in order; stamp their name; type the alphabet in order; type their name; use the paintbrush to print the alphabet; and use the pencil to write their name.Time:

Purpose:
To teach: verbal recognition of the alphabet; visual recognition of the alphabet; recognition of the student's name and the ability to type the letters of the alphabet and the student's name.

Materials:
Alphabet storybook (such as Winnie the Pooh's ABC), computer paint program for children (Kidpix). Optional: alphabet poster, individual alphabet desk strips, and student name card.

Procedure:
1. Verbally review the alphabet with the students by reciting the alphabet while pointing out the letters on an alphabet poster or chart. Read an alphabet story to the students (such as Winnie the Pooh's ABC).
2. Review the previously learned procedure for using the alphabet stamps in Kidpix. ( In Kidpix, click on the "A" stamp icon on the left-hand tool bar.) The teacher will click on the letter stamps on the bottom of the page and will demonstrate stamping the letters in order on the top of the page. Students are to click on each letter, then stamp them at the top of their page in order.
3. Students will then use the alphabet stamps to stamp their name.
4. Teacher will demonstrate how to click on the "paintbrush" on the left-hand tool bar. Then the teacher will review how to click on the "down arrow" on the bottom tool bar to go to the next row of stamps. The student will then click on the ABC box, place their cursor on the left-hand side of their page then hold down the mouse button while dragging their mouse from left to right. This will paint the alphabet in order.
5. Teacher will then review clicking on GOODIES on the top tool bar, then dragging their mouse down to select "Type text". Students will need to place their cursor on the clear space under their stamped alphabet, then click their mouse button.
6. Using "type text", students will use the keyboard to type the letters of the alphabet in order. If the student does not know the letters of the alphabet, they can refer to the letters they previously stamped on the top of their page.
7. Student will use "type text" to type their name. They can refer to their name card if they need assistance.
8. Student will then click on the "pencil" icon on the left-hand tool bar.
They will then use the mouse to draw their name using the pencil tool.
9. If the student completes these tasks before class time is over, they may stamp, type or draw any letters or words they want.

Observations:
Students with fine motor skill difficulty may need assistance with the "paintbrush" ABC printing. If they need to redo the line, just click on the "oops" face on the left-hand tool bar. This will make the entire line disappear and they can try again. The teacher can help to hold the mouse button down as the student drags the mouse from left to right.

Conclusions:
The students enjoyed the different activities for producing the alphabet. Student frustration was minimal and all students were engaged during the activity.

Extension:
Students can: physically write the alphabet; paint the letters with real paint; trace the alphabet in sand boxes; write the alphabet or their names with pencils or crayons; or use real stamps to stamp the alphabet or their names.
