Mosaic Magic
Target Curriculum: History and Social Science
Target Grade: 3 - 3
SOLs:
HSS.3.1
Time:
75 minutes (30m + 45m)
Objective:
To help students understand an important art form of ancient Greece and Rome. (Art is one of the nine terms students are expected to understand in order to describe the civilizations of Greece and Rome.)
Purpose:
To teach vocabulary associated with mosaics and to provide an opportunity for students to make their own mosaics.
Materials:
Scissors
White glue
Various colors of construction paper cut into very small squares
Poster board cut into 8-1/2 x 11 sheets for use as backing
Photocopies of mosaics (SEE NOTE)
Procedure:
Period Number One (30 minutes)
1. Show students pictures of Roman mosaics.
2. Read aloud "Mosaic Magic" (SEE NOTE)
3. Complete "Word Find" (SEE NOTE)
Period Number Two (45 minutes)
1. Have pairs of students choose a mosaic from the photocopies provided (SEE NOTE)
2. Using glue and construction paper, help students completely cover the photocopies to complete their mosaics.
Observations:
It is easier to clean up if the students cover their desks with newpaper before they start work. A paper cutter is quicker than scissors for cutting the tesserae out of the construction paper.
For Your Information:
The following are available as electronic files that can be e-mailed or attached to the lesson plan:
1. Photocopies of three Roman mosaics (dog.jpg, skeleton.jpg, and geometry.jpg)
Copies of "Skeletons"
Copies of "Geometry"
Copies of "Dog"
2. "Mosaic Magic" text (text.doc)
Copies of "Mosaic Magic"
3. "Word Find" game (wordfind.doc)
Copies of "Word Find"
Extension:
Encourage students to look for mosaics in malls, stores, churches, and other public buildings.
Class Discussion Questions:
1. What happens to the appearance of a mosaic when you get really close?
2. Why were mosaics a good choice for floors and sidewalks?
Cautions and Concerns:
Rice, beans, fish gravel, colored eggshells, or jellybeans are all possible tesserae, but paper chips are easier for young kids to manage.
Comments from Author:
As noted above, I have photocopies of mosaics as well as the "Mosaic Magic" text and the "Word Find" game all on electronic files, which I would be happy to provide if you can let me know how to send them to you. My Madeira high school students have hosted several workshops for area elementary schools using these materials.
